The Way of Suffering
Location: On-Line
Date of Event: May 02, 2020
Speakers: Deborah Anne Quibell, Jennifer Leigh Selig, Dennis Patrick Slattery
Like the Egyptian goddess Inanna, we have descended into the underworld. Like Inanna, who is stripped of her clothing as she passes through each of the seven gates of the underworld, we have had so much stripped from us.
But a pandemic can’t take away our creative spirit. Quiet it, maybe. Block it for a time. Change its course. Redirect its energy. But strip it irrevocably? Never. Like Inanna, we will ascend again. Bearing gifts from the underworld.
Our creative work can be in service to our soul’s growth, and ripen during (or long after) times of trial. Our creativity can help us survive times of suffering. Even more, within our expressive art (whatever form it takes) lies the opportunity for healing, renewal, and transformation.
We plan to take a different principle each week (emotional, archetypal, and healing) to frame the conversation. We’ll share excerpts and stories from the book, and from our own creative lives as we respond to this underworld journey. We’ll highlight the need in these times to both “breathe into” our suffering (in order hold and process what is happening within and around us) and “breathe out” our suffering through our unique (and courageous) work. We’ll share with you how we’re breathing in and out, and some of the responses of other creative souls that are particularly inspiring us now. Through a private optional Facebook group, we’ll offer you an opportunity to share your responses as well, both any art you are moved to create, and any art that is moving you to create.
