I just have a question. Do longer posts automatically have to await moderation in order to be published? I have noticed that usually it is my longer posts that do not get posted right away that get a notification that “This post is awaiting moderation” and that shorter/quick responses do appear in the forum right away.

COHO’s filter holds posts with multiple links for approval, as that’s a common attribute of spam. Once we approve a post that includes multiple links, that person should be able to include more than one link in a post in the future without waiting for approval.

However, seems the filter also holds post that just includes a raw link: for example, if you say “I found this on https://www.jcf.org ” instead of “I found this at JCF” – so please use the hyperlink icon in your menu when posting links to somewhere else (looks a little like a diagonal paper clip).

This helps a lot, Stephen. But what if you have a post with a short bibliography, do you then use the hyperlinks for all the links that begin with https>>

Good question, Shaheda.

A bibliography suggests an article that’s being shared (whether yours or someone else’s). If the references in the bibliography are to web pages, feel free to go ahead with the raw links. Just be aware it might not post immediately, as that will require manual approval, and I’m not always on online. In fact, I’ve had tech issues that sidelined me most of the past 24 hours, though that seems to be resolved now (sometimes a laptop update simply goes awry).

Unfortunately, every day our website is probed for vulnerabilities by automated hackers, and our first priority has to be security. Our tech team recently changed and strengthened our security plug-in, and I’m still trying to get a handle on that. Seems that even hyperlinks are now requiring approval. As posts and participants continue to increase, I hope we can move beyond having to manually approve each such post, which makes me a choke point slowing the spontaneous flow of conversation.

As we grow, we’ll likely add other active moderators, which should speed that process, but we don’t have the traffic to justify that yet.

But apart from the need to authorize posts, one good reason for hyperlinking is that the person posting the link can click on the gear icon and select the option for the link to open in a new window. Especially if you have multiple links, it’s then easier to refer to the original post while checking out the link in a new window, rather than being pulled off site and having to continually navigate back and forth between the link and the post.

However, we are still feeling our way, trying to figure out the smoothest flow, so for now just do the best you can, using whichever method works, and be patient with me.

The less distraction by outward links, the better the discussion keeps on the initial track. Mythology being philosophical rooted, many topics go astray in extremely lengthly musings, impossible to digest. Pictures (limited in size) are allowable and easy to keep in control, references preferred only as written footnotes for further reading also.

Hello Stephen and Mars,

Thank you for your response on links that cause delays —  that for security reasons it’s handled manually, and even hyperlinks are needing approval. I am all for security then.

Mars, agree with you, “The less distraction by outward links, the better the discussion keeps on the initial track.” As a general rule, I would not run into this problem because my posts might be just a page and a half.  The delay occurred only on posts in “Share you work corner”.

My contribution was in general, not individual. And considering our fragile times, security, screening are obvious as (risk of crossposting) ‘Jetpacks’ has to be avoided at all times.
