Departure
SpaceX launches a tiny, one person space craft in conjunction with their Commuter 1 Rocket mission to Mars when it’s released into Earth’s orbit.
Initiation
The name of the ship is “mono.” Jenny, a Grad student and newbie astronaut from MIT, is videotaping six major environmental crisis points (hot spots) over a 24 hour period for a PBS special. Inside the vessel, she is dodging her own food scraps, user manuals and errant electronic gear, while outside the ship is a multitude of space junk whizzing past her. She is on course.
In orbit, Jenny seeks out each hot spot that comes into view for video capture and analysis:
Antarctic – temperature change, glacier melt and rising sea levels are changing global weather
Upper Amazonia – clear-cutting and burning and environmental devastation in the jungle continues
Adani coal mine – a new water and land disaster in Queensland, Australia
Atlanta – fires are spreading due to anti-police riots
St. Petersburg – fires are spreading due to anti-government bombings and riots
The Arctic Circle (see Antarctic)
One by one, Jenney is putting together a troubling mosaic of race and class struggle, protest, environmental degradation and hope. What are the issues that matter the most on Earth now?
Return
Her video files have been transmitted to a PBS production station in SF for editing as Jenny re-enters the Earth’s atmosphere. Her 24 hours in space is up! Fortunately she and her craft splash safely in the Indian Ocean due to the ship’s protective heat shield. mono is bobbing: one final cold spot, another Hero. Yet another PBS investigative story to come.
